How long have you been natural?
I began to transition in June of 2009, and became completely natural September of 2010.
What made you decide to go natural?
I’d been natural most of my life, and I never liked relaxers. So eventually I decided I was over it and just stopped relaxing my hair. I had no idea there was a whole natural hair community, and I definitely had no idea there was a youtube world of naturals.
What is your current relationship with your hair?
I have a complete love for my hair. No complaints. With all of its “faults” I find perfection. I can’t explain it, haha! I simply love my hair, as confused as it is at times.
What is the trick or technique you are most thankful for finding out about?
Sectioning! It has helped me so much with detangling and managing my hair in general.
While natural, what is the one biggest regret /mistake you made?
The overuse of heat. I think that is almost every natural’s biggest mistake, when it comes to mistakes on natural hair that is. So many people contact me about issues they’re having with their hair, and it always boils down to the overuse of heat. Sometimes they don’t even realize it’s heat damage. I know I had to google my hair’s “symptoms” before I knew what was wrong.
What is the craziest hairstyle or treatment you have done to your hair?
I think that has yet to come, I’m about to go … Blonde. Pray for me lol
What specific products can you not live without?
My homemade whipped butter, flaxseed gel and olive oil. That’s my triple threat. It’s all so nourishing, especially the whipped butter. I think it’s because I use combos of different types of butters, instead of sticking to Shea.
What advice would you give to someone considering going natural?
It’s going to seem hard in the beginning, but you’ll look back later and think “Wow, that was a breeze!”. You really have to let go of the image you have of yourself, and realize a new you is growing.
